BAR388HGA-BK Oregon Scientific
Wireless Weather Station, in Black

Striking in gloss black, the BAR388HGA-BK Oregon Scientific Wireless Weather Station, in Black is loaded with features. It displays the indoor temperature and humidity plus the outdoor (or other remote) temperature and relative humidity from 1 to 3 locations. It also displays the outdoor comfort level and heat index (with warning if applicable). In addition, it displays the current barometric pressure, provides highly accurate weather forecasts, and shows the trends for barometric pressure, indoor and outdoor temperatures, and indoor and outdoor humidity. The temperature and humidity min/max memory also retains min/max heat index values. Audible high and low temperature alarms can be set for remote Channel 1, and a visible ice warning can be displayed for Channel 1 as well. Rounding out this station's many features is a radio-controlled ("atomic") clock with calendar, moon phase, and snooze alarm.

With the touch of a button, monitor the temperature and humidity both indoors and at 1 to 3 remote locations up to 100 feet (30 meters) away from the main unit--and without ever stringing a wire or cable! One THGR122N wireless remote thermo-hygro sensor is included, and the station can actually monitor up to three remote sensors.

Styled in black, the BAR388HGA-BK looks very clean and sleek. This is because its control pushbuttons are on the right side panel and on the back. (The °F/°C switch and a Reset button are in the battery compartment.) It's also because the snooze bar at the top is part of a decorative flange that encircles the case and because the on/off switch for the daily alarm is concealed under the lower right corner of the front panel. To turn the alarm on or off, you simply press the case front where it says ALARM and shows a sound wave symbol.

The BAR388HGA-BK wireless weather station is 4.7 inches wide by 6.7 inches high, and its LCD panel is 2.3 inches wide by 4.1 inches high. Temperature digits (except tenths) and humidity digits are about 0.6 inches tall, and time digits are about 0.5 inch tall. If your vision is reasonably normal, you'll find the displays on this station easy to read.

The top line (some might say top section) of the LCD panel is the Weather Forecast Area. In it you see one of four forecast icons: Clear, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, or Rainy (which predicts snow in cold weather). The forecast is based on barometric pressure changes. It's for 12 to 24 hours in the future and about 70% to 75% accurate. You also see the current barometric pressure in mb (millibars) or inHg (inches of mercury) and a barometric pressure trend arrow (rising, steady, or falling). A really cool user-settable altitude compensation feature lets you display the sea-level air pressure even though your location is well above or below sea level. Below the forecast icon are an outdoor comfort level icon (WET, COMF, or DRY) and a heat index icon (CAUTION, EXTREME CAUTION, DANGER, or EXTREME DANGER) when the index is high. The conditions under which the comfort level icons and heat index icons appear are given in tables in the BAR388HGA-BK User Manual.

Below the Weather Forecast Area is the Outdoor Temperature Area. In it you see the outdoor (or other remote) temperature and relative humidity for the selected remote channel (1, 2, or 3, as indicated by the icon that also indicates sensor reception). You also see temperature and humidity trend arrows. If the Channel 1 remote temperature falls to between 37°F and 28°F (3°C and -2°C), an ice warning icon in the form of a snowflake or ice crystal above the temperature trend arrow flashes on and off. Additional icons that may be displayed are Channel 1 high and low temperature alarm and high and low humidity icons. These are in the form of bells. MAX and MIN icons appear when you are viewing outdoor temperature and humidity records, and a low battery icon appears when the battery in the selected channel's sensor needs replacement. You can option the display to auto-scan between active sensors, and you can manually toggle between current, minimum, and maximum temperatures for a selected sensor.

The HEAT INDEX button on the back of the BAR388HGA-BK gives you several additional outdoor temperature display options. You can display the current outdoor temperature or, in its place, the current heat index for the selected remote channel. You can also toggle between current/minimum/maximum heat index readings. Another option automatically toggles between current temperature and current heat index.

Below the Outdoor Temperature Area is the Indoor Temperature Area. In it you see an indoor sensor icon. (The indoor sensor is actually internal to the main unit.) You also see the indoor temperature and relative humidity plus temperature and humidity trend arrows. MAX and MIN icons appear when you are viewing indoor temperature and humidity records.

Below the Indoor Temperature Area is the Clock/Alarm Area. The time is shown as hour and minutes in 12-hour format with AM or PM or in 24-hour format. Month and date are shown digitally as MM/DD or DD/MM. The weekday is a two-letter abbreviation in your choice of English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. The MODE button on the right side of the case lets you display clock seconds as an alternative to the weekday. If the clock has successfully received the WWVB 60 kHz time-synchronization radio signal from the U.S. atomic clock in Colorado, a tower and waves icon appears to the left of the time. Although you must select your continental U.S. time zone (Pacific, Mountain, Central, or Eastern), the zone is not displayed during normal operation. The current moon phase is displayed above the calendar information as one of eight icons. These are shown and described in the User Manual. You can view the moon phase for any day from year 2001 through 2099.

The BAR388HGA-BK's atomic clock has a single daily crescendo alarm with 2-minute duration and an available 8-minute snooze function. The set alarm time can be viewed as an alternative to the normal time and calendar display.

One THGR122N wireless remote temperature and humidity sensor is included with the BAR388HGA-BK, and the station can actually monitor up to three temperature or temperature-humidity sensors at a distance of up to 100 feet (30 meters). The THGR122N has its own LCD panel for viewing the temperature and humidity locally. You can select °F or °C for the temperature unit on the remote. The temperature unit selected on the main station overrides that of the remote(s). Additional remote sensors can be obtained separately and include the following:

  • THGR268. This is a temperature and humidity sensor with its own display. It is essentially equivalent to the included THGR122N.
  • THGN123N. This is a non-displaying temperature and humidity sensor that, with lithium batteries installed, works down to -40 °C/F.
  • THC268. This is a temperature-only remote with its own display and a waterproof probe on a 10-foot (3-meter) cable for use in pools, spas, hot tubs, freezers, soil, etc.

The main unit is designed for free-standing use only and has a non-skid "back foot." The THGR122N remote sensor can be wall-mounted via a keyhole slot on the back, or, with the included wire table stand installed, it can rest on a horizontal surface. This remote is water-resistant but not waterproof. Choose a mounting location where the THGR122N is protected from direct sunlight and direct precipitation.

The main unit uses three AA alkaline batteries, and the remote thermo-hygro sensor uses two AAA alkaline batteries. All batteries must be obtained separately. If the remote will be used in sub-freezing temperature conditions, lithium batteries are recommended instead of alkaline.

Features and Benefits:

  • It's wireless! Easy setup with no cables to string--remote temperature-humidity sensors send data back to main unit (base station) via 433MHz radio waves.
  • Know the temperature and humidity both indoors and at up to three remote locations--outdoors or in your greenhouse, baby's room, warehouse, wine cellar or other location--from the comfort of your home or office.
  • At a glance, check the current barometric pressure; the outdoor comfort level and, if applicable, a heat index warning; trends for  temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure; and the weather forecast.
  • Four weather forecast icons indicate Clear, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, or Rainy (which predicts snow in cold weather).
  • Weather forecast is for 12 to 24 hours in the future, covers an 18- to 30-mile (30- to 50-km) radius, and is about 70% to 75% accurate..
  • Trend arrows indicate Rising, Steady, or Falling for barometric pressure, outdoor temperature and humidity, and indoor temperature and humidity.
  • Three outdoor comfort icons indicate COMF(ortable), WET, or DRY.
  • Four heat index icons indicate CAUTION, EXTREME CAUTION, DANGER, or EXTREME DANGER.
  • Audible high and low temperature alerts and a visible ice warning can be set for remote Channel 1.
  • User-selectable metric or English units: Choose °C or °F for temperature indications (independently selectable on main unit and remotes) and mb or inHg for main unit's barometric pressure indication. Main unit always shows the temperature units for which it is optioned (°C or °F) even if one or more remote sensors are optioned otherwise.
  • User-settable altitude compensation for barometer to obtain correct sea-level pressure reading at altitudes from -328 to +8202 feet (-100 to +2500 meters).

Note: Even though it's made clear in the unit's instructions, we thought we'd also mention here that you need to enter your altitude in meters (10-meter increments) for the altitude compensation. But even if you're used to feet instead of meters, this is really easy. You just multiply your location's altitude in feet by 0.3, round the result to the nearest 10, and enter that number.

  • Station comes complete with one THGR122N thermo-hygro sensor--add one or two additional sensors (optional; not included) to monitor up to three remote locations, indoors or out.
  • Integral memory stores maximum and minimum temperature and humidity readings (indoor and from remotes) for instant pushbutton display.
  • Integral radio-controlled clock with calendar and alarm automatically synchronizes itself to the U.S. atomic clock in Colorado and also automatically adjusts for Daylight Saving Time.
  • Clock can be manually set if desired.
