Oregon Scientific BAR386A-S Silver Wireless Weather Forecaster

The Oregon Scientific BAR386A-S Silver Wireless Weather Forecaster has a great variety of features. It displays the indoor temperature plus the outdoor (or other remote) temperature from 1 to 3 locations. It also provides highly accurate weather forecasts and shows the trends for barometric pressure and indoor and all remote temperatures.  The BAR386A-S's temperature memory records and retains minimum and maximum values (since the last reset) for instant pushbutton display. Audible high and low temperature alarms can be set for remote Channel 1, and a visible ice warning can be displayed for Channel 1 as well. Rounding out this station's many features is a radio-controlled ("atomic") clock with calendar, moon phase, and snooze alarm.

With the touch of a button, monitor the temperature both indoors and at 1 to 3 remote locations up to 100 feet (30 meters) away from the main unit--and without ever stringing a wire or cable! One THN132N wireless remote thermo sensor is included, and the station can actually monitor up to three remote thermo sensors.

Styled in silver, the BAR386A-S weather forecast station looks very clean and unfussy. This is because its control pushbuttons are on the right side panel and on the back. (A Reset button is in the battery compartment.) It's also because the snooze bar at the top is part of a decorative flange that encircles the case and because the on/off switch for the daily alarm is concealed under the lower right corner of the front panel. To turn the alarm on or off, you simply press the case front where it says ALARM and shows a sound wave symbol.

The BAR386A-S wireless weather forecast station is 5.1 inches wide by 4.4 inches high, and its LCD panel is 3.2 inches wide by 2.1 inches high. Temperature digits (except tenths, which are smaller) are about 0.6 inches tall, and time digits are just over 0.4 inch tall. If your vision is reasonably normal, you'll find the displays on this station easy to read.

The upper section of the LCD panel is the weather area. In it, you see one of four forecast icons: Clear, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, or Rainy (which predicts snow in cold weather). The forecast is based on barometric pressure changes. It's for 12 to 24 hours in the future and about 70% to 75% accurate. You also see a barometric pressure trend arrow (rising, steady, or falling) in the upper left corner of the weather area.

To the right of the forecast icon is displayed the outdoor (or other remote) temperature and, below it, the indoor temperature. Above indoor and outdoor degree tenths are displayed trend arrows (rising, steady, or falling) for indoor and outdoor temperatures. In the outdoor temperature display, a house icon with a number (1, 2, or 3) in it indicates the selected channel, and waves above the house indicate successful signal reception from that channel's remote. A house icon containing the word IN appears in the indoor temperature display.

If high and/or low temperature alarms are set for Channel 1, alarm bell Hi and Lo icons appear in the Channel 1 outdoor temperature display. If the Channel 1 remote temperature falls to between 37°F and 28°F (3°C and -2°C), an ice warning icon in the form of a snowflake or ice crystal below the Channel 1 (house) icon flashes on and off. You can option the display to auto-scan between active sensors, and you can press the MEM button to manually toggle between current, minimum, and maximum temperatures for a selected sensor. Displaying minimum and maximum values for a remote channel also causes minimum and maximum indoor values to be displayed as well.

The lower section of the LCD panel is the clock and alarm area. The time is shown as hour and minutes in 12-hour format with AM or PM. Month and date are shown digitally as MM/DD. The weekday is a two-letter abbreviation in your choice of English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. The MODE button on the right side of the case lets you display clock seconds as an alternative to the weekday. If the clock has successfully received the WWVB 60 kHz time-synchronization radio signal from the U.S. atomic clock in Colorado, a tower and waves icon appears to the left of the time. Although you must select your continental U.S. time zone (Pacific, Mountain, Central, or Eastern), the zone is not displayed during normal operation. Also, the year is displayed only during manual setup. The current moon phase is displayed above the calendar information as one of eight icons. These are shown and described in the User Manual. You can view the moon phase for any day from year 2001 through 2099.

The BAR386A-S's atomic clock has a single daily crescendo alarm with 2-minute duration and an available 8-minute snooze function. The set alarm time can be viewed as an alternative to the normal time and calendar display.

One THN132N wireless remote temperature sensor is included with the BAR386A-S, and the station can actually monitor up to three temperature sensors at a distance of up to 100 feet (30 meters). The THN132N is a non-displaying sensor. Additional remote sensors can be obtained separately and include the following:

  • THGR268. This is a temperature and humidity sensor with its own display. If you use this remote, you won't see the humidity on the BAR386A-S main unit.
  • THGN123N. This is a non-displaying temperature and humidity sensor that, with lithium batteries installed, works down to -40°C/F. If you use this remote, you won't see the humidity on the BAR386A-S main unit.
  • THC268. This is a temperature-only sensor with its own display and a waterproof probe on a 10-foot (3-meter) cable for use in pools, spas, hot tubs, freezers, soil, etc.

The BAR386A-S main unit is designed for free-standing use only and has a non-skid "back foot." The THN132N remote sensor can rest on a horizontal surface, or it can be wall-mounted via a keyhole slot on the back. Please be aware that the small table stand that extends from the back of the remote is an integral part of the battery compartment cover that makes up most of back of the remote. You can hang the remote on a wall with the stand in place. This remote is water-resistant but not waterproof. Choose a mounting location where the THN132N is protected from direct sunlight and direct precipitation.

The main unit uses three AA alkaline batteries, and the remote temperature sensor uses one AA alkaline battery. All batteries must be obtained separately. If the remote will be used in sub-freezing temperature conditions, a lithium battery is recommended instead of alkaline. Low battery icons are displayed on the main unit for itself and all active remotes when replacement becomes necessary.

Note: This product comes in a clear plastic blister pack that, once cut open, cannot be resealed. Because opening a blister pack renders the enclosed product unfit for resale, non-defective products whose blister packs have been opened are not returnable.
