The Oregon Scientific RAR381-BK is 3.5 inches wide by 3.6 inches high,
and its LCD panel is 1.6 inches wide by 1.7 inches high. Temperature
digits (except tenths) and humidity digits are about 0.6 inches tall, and
clock time/calendar/alarm time digits are about 0.4 inch tall (clock
seconds/weekday are smaller). If your vision is reasonably normal, you'll
find the displays on this product easy to read.
The top line of the
two-line display shows the outdoor (or other remote) temperature on the
left and the indoor temperature on the right. Temperature trend arrows (rising,
steady, or falling) for indoor and all remote temperatures are also shown.
The house icon for indoor temperature contains the word IN, and the house
icon for the outdoor temperature contains a 1, 2, or 3 for the selected remote channel. A waves icon above the house indicates reception of the remote's signal. If high
and/or low temperature alarms are set for Channel 1, alarm bell Hi and Lo
icons appear in the display. If the
Channel 1 remote temperature falls to between 37°F
and 28°F (3°C and -2°C), an ice warning icon in the form of a snowflake
or ice crystal above the temperature trend arrow flashes on and off.
You
can option the outdoor temperature display to auto-scan between all active remote
sensors at 3-second intervals. You can also press the MEM button to manually toggle between current,
maximum, and minimum temperatures for all active
remote sensors. When you do this, minimum and maximum indoor temperatures
are also displayed in the indoor temperature area.
The second line of the
display shows clock time as hour and
minutes in 12-hour format with AM or PM or in 24-hour format. The MODE button on the right side of the case lets you
display either the weekday or clock seconds along with clock time. The weekday is a two-letter
abbreviation in your choice of English, French, German, Italian, or
Spanish. As an alternative to clock time with weekday or seconds, you can
display calendar information (numeric month, date, and year). The month
and date in the calendar display can appear as MM/DD or DD/MM. The year
can be set to 00 through 99. The second line of the display is also where
you can show and set the alarm time.
The RAR381-BK's digital quartz
clock has a single daily crescendo alarm with 2-minute duration. The alarm time can be viewed
and set in the second line of the display. A sound wave ((.))
icon appears to the left of the hour digit when the alarm time is
displayed instead of clock time or calendar information. An alarm bell icon appears to the left of
the hour digit when the alarm is set.
One THN132N wireless
remote temperature sensor is included with the RAR381-BK, and
the main unit can actually monitor up to three temperature sensors at a distance of up to 100 feet (30 meters).
The THN132N is a non-displaying remote. A red LED on the remote's front panel lights when transmission is occurring. Additional remote sensors can be obtained
separately. Here's what's available:
- THC268. This is a
temperature remote with its own display and a waterproof probe on a 10-foot (3-meter)
cable for use in pools,
spas, hot tubs, freezers, soil, etc.
- THGR268. This is a
temperature and humidity remote with its own display. While it can
work with the RAR381-BK, you'll only see the remote temperature and not
the humidity on the RAR381-BK.
- THGN123N. This is a
non-displaying temperature and humidity remote that, with lithium batteries
installed, operates down to -40 °C/F. While it can work with the RAR381-BK, you'll only see the remote temperature and not the humidity on
the RAR381-BK.
You can select °F or °C for the temperature unit on
the THC268 and THGR268 remotes. The temperature unit selected on the main
unit overrides
that of the remote. There's actually one more temperature-only remote that
can work with the RAR381-BK, and it's the THR268. This remote is a
discontinued model, but if you have one available, you can go ahead and
use it.
The RAR381-BK main unit is designed
for free-standing use only and has a non-skid "back foot." The
THN132N remote sensor can rest on a horizontal surface, or it can be
wall-mounted via a keyhole slot on the back. Please be aware that the
small table stand that extends from the back of the remote is an integral
part of the battery compartment cover that makes up most of back of the
remote. You can hang the remote on a wall with the stand in place. This
remote is water-resistant but not waterproof. Choose a mounting location
where the THN132N is protected from direct sunlight and direct
precipitation.
The main unit uses two AA
alkaline batteries, and the remote thermo sensor uses one AA
alkaline battery. All batteries must be obtained separately. If the
remote will be used in sub-freezing temperatures, a lithium battery is recommended instead of alkaline.
