|
| The world's first talking
weather station has arrived! The Oregon Scientific BAR321HGA Talking
Wireless Weather Station provides voice announcements of time and
weather that can be set either as alarms or at regular intervals. This
station monitors temperature and humidity both indoors and at up to 5
outdoor/remote locations. Weather forecasts are displayed as animated
graphical icons, and barometric pressure is displayed both digitally and
as a history bar graph. The station's clock automatically sets itself to
the U.S. atomic clock. An optional ultraviolet (UV) radiation remote
sensor can provide valuable ultraviolet index (UVI) data. |

The
BAR321HGA is the first weather station that actually talks to you.
It can tell you the time, temperature, humidity, and weather
forecast in any of 5 languages. It can also show you an animated
graphical weather forecast. The station also displays indoor
temperature and humidity plus outdoor
temperature and humidity
from 1 to 5 locations up to 230 feet (70 meters) away. Minimum and maximum temperature
and humidity readings are
stored in memory for display at the push of a button. Additional
displays include comfort level, barometric pressure, and a pressure
history bar graph. If the optional UV remote is used, UVI data and
safe UV exposure time can also be displayed. A
totally accurate atomic clock with calendar and two alarms rounds out
the features of the highly capable BAR321HGA talking weather
station.
|
|
| At about 8-1/4 inches high by
3.5 inches wide, the BAR321HGA weather station
won't take up much space on a shelf or desk, but it will provide you
with a wealth of information in both audible and visible formats. A
Special Remote. The
BAR321HGA comes with a unique remote temperature and humidity sensor
and transmitter. The RTGR328NA is a 5-channel remote that contains not only a
thermo-hygro
sensor but also the atomic clock receiver for the BAR321HGA main station. The remote receives
time synchronization signals from the U.S. atomic clock in
Colorado (radio station WWVB, 60 kHz) and transmits this information, plus temperature and humidity
data, to the BAR321HGA main station via 433 MHz radio waves. As a result, the main station's
clock maintains the same accuracy as the atomic clock. Please be aware that the RTGR328NA remote
cannot function as an atomic clock receiver for any previous Oregon Scientific
time and weather instruments.
The RTGR328NA remote has its own
2-line LCD panel for local viewing. The top line displays the time and a
time-signal reception icon. The bottom line displays the selected
channel number for the remote and automatically alternates between temperature
and humidity. Although the BAR321HGA main station can operate with up to
five remotes, only one can be a remote that receives time
synchronization radio signals,
and that's the RTGR328NA that comes with the station. The additional
remotes are other models that must be purchased
separately. When using multiple remotes, be sure to select a different
channel number for each.
Optional Remotes. The optional remotes
(without time signal reception capability) that work with the BAR321HGA are as follows:
- THGR228N (3-channel
sensor).
- THGR268 (3-channel
sensor). This is a temperature and humidity sensor with its own
display.
- THGR328N (5-channel
sensor).
- THR228N (3-channel
sensor).
- THR268 (3-channel
sensor). This is a temperature-only sensor with its own display.
- THC268 (3-channel
sensor). This is a temperature-only sensor with a probe on a 10-foot
(3-meter) wire and its own display.
The RTGR328NA, THGR268, THR268, and
THC268 are currently available. The three remotes whose numbers end in N
are new units that, at the time of this writing, have not yet been
released by the manufacturer. Please continue to check this website, as
we will be offering these new remotes as soon as we receive them.
Controls and Display.
Now, let's get back to
what the BAR321HGA actually does. Except for the buttons that select °F or
°C for temperature and
inHg or mb/hPa for pressure and the RESET button, all station setup and operating
functions are controlled by 8 pushbuttons on the right side of the station
and the SNOOZE/LIGHT bar on the top. The station's backlit LCD panel has 4
display areas. From top to bottom, these are the weather forecast area,
the clock/alarm/calendar area, the temperature/humidity/comfort zone area,
and the UVI/barometer area. The forecast icon is continuously displayed.
The other 3 areas have multiple user-selectable displays. You use the
station's SELECT button to select an areas and additional buttons (e.g.,
MODE and CHANNEL) to bring up the desired displays in those areas.
Weather Forecast.
The weather forecast area displays any of 5 animated forecast icons. The icons indicate Clear, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, Rainy,
and Snowy. The Clear and Partly Cloudy icons have day and night
versions. The barometric pressure-based forecast is for 12 to 24 hours in the future. It covers an 19- to 31-mile (30- to 50-km) radius and is 70 to 75 percent accurate.
Clock, Calendar, and
Alarms.
The clock/alarm/calendar area has 4 display modes:
- Hour, minutes, seconds,
month and date.
- Hour, minutes, weekday,
date, month. The two-letter weekday abbreviation can be in your choice
of English, German, French, Italian, or Spanish.
- Hour, minutes, weekday,
plus hour and minutes for a second time zone.
- Hour, minutes, weekday,
plus month and date for a second time zone.
Time can be displayed in
12-hour or 24-hour format. Month and date can be shown as month/date or
date/month. The language you select for the weekday
abbreviation is the language in which time and weather announcements are
made if Audio Broadcast is activated. Also, all Audio Broadcast setup is
done in the clock setting mode.
The BAR321HGA has 2 alarms.
One is a daily alarm, and the other is a pre-alarm for cold, snowy, or icy
weather. The daily alarm can be set to go off at the same time every day,
and you can select either a crescendo beep pattern or a talking alarm. (If
the supplied ac adapter is not plugged in, only the beep alarm is
available.) The
pre-alarm, when set, sounds only when the daily alarm is activated and the
recorded temperature from the Channel 1 remote sensor falls to 2°C (36.5°F)
or lower. You can set the pre-alarm to sound 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes
before the daily alarm.
Temperature, Humidity,
and Comfort Zone.
The temperature/humidity/comfort zone area displays the following:
- Indoor temperature
and humidity along with trend arrows for both readings plus the
indoor comfort level (wet, comfortable, or dry).
- For the selected
remote (Channel 1 through 5), temperature and humidity along
with trend arrows for both readings plus the comfort level at
the remote's location.
Barometric Pressure and UVI. The UVI/barometer
area has 2 display modes:
- In barometer mode, a 24-hour history bar
graph is displayed at the top of the area. Below it, current and
historical barometric pressure readings are displayed digitally. At
the bottom is a digital display indicating hours in the past (0
through 24). You use the HISTORY button to view the barometric
pressures recorded at these times.
- In UVI mode (with optional UVR138A UV
Radiation Sensor active), you can view a 10-hour UVI record. You can
also view acceptable UV exposure times that are automatically
calculated based on preset user profiles that you enter (4 users
maximum). A UV danger alert is given when the UVI reaches unsafe
levels.
You can set the altitude
for your location to obtain the correct sea-level barometric pressure
reading. The settable range is -100 to
+2500 meters (-328 to +8202 feet) in 10-meter increments.
Audio Broadcast.
As mentioned above, Audio Broadcast setup is done in the clock setting
mode, and the broadcast language is the one selected for the weekday
display. The supplied ac adapter must be plugged in for the Audio
Broadcast feature to work (and also the talking alarm). The BAR321HGA can
broadcast the current time, indoor temperature and humidity, and weather
forecast. This can be done on the hour for a specified time period (such
as 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly) or once every 24 hours at a selected time.
You can also set the audio volume level for low, medium, or high. The icon
for Audio Broadcast On is displayed in the UVI/barometer area.
Mounting. The
BAR321HGA main station comes
with both a wall mounting bracket and a table stand, either of which
installs easily on the back of the unit. The RTGR328NA
remote sensor can be mounted on a wall, or you can fold out the integral
stand and place it on a flat surface.
Powering. The
BAR321HGA main station
is powered by an ac adapter (7.5 Vdc, 300 mA output) and also requires
three AA alkaline
batteries primarily for memory backup. The RTGR328NA remote sensor uses two AA alkaline
batteries. Both the ac adapter and all five batteries are included.
Be sure to install batteries in the remote before you power up the
main station. This will ensure that the
remote registers properly with the main station. By the way, if you
want to use an outdoor remote in sub-freezing conditions, we recommend that you
replace its AA alkaline batteries with lithium batteries. Lithium cells
retain their power down to about -40°F (-40°C).
