The Oregon
Scientific BAR638HGA Wireless Weather Forecaster with Temperature and
Humidity
is boldly styled in black with silver trim. In its backlit LCD panel, this
compact forecasting station displays indoor temperature and humidity plus the
temperature and humidity from 1 to 3 outdoor or other
remote locations. The station also provides highly accurate weather
forecasts based on barometric pressure changes. The BAR638HGA's radio-controlled "atomic" clock
has a daily snooze alarm plus calendar and moon phase displays.

Small, sleek, and stylish,
the BAR638HGA weather forecaster provides all the basic weather information most
folks want and need, along with absolutely accurate time and a
daily alarm. The
weather forecast icons are kinetic. The indoor temperature and
humidity and the temperature and humidity for the selected remote
channel are displayed simultaneously. Integral min/max memory lets you display indoor and all remote minimum and maximum
temperature and humidity values. Along with the time are
displayed the month, date, and weekday plus the moon phase. One
reason that this forecast station looks so clean and handsome is
that most of its control pushbuttons are located on the back of the case at
the outer edges. Also, the SNOOZE/LIGHT bar
makes up the entire curved top of the station.

The
BAR638HGA weather forecast station is just over 2.5 inches wide by about 6 inches high,
and its 5-line LCD panel is almost 4 inches tall. If your vision is reasonably normal, you'll
find the displays on this station easy to read. Hour and minute digits are
just over 1/2 inch, and humidity and temperature digits are just under 1/2
inch except for degree tenths and calendar information, which are about
1/4 inch. For night viewing, the LCD panel has a bright blue, pushbutton-activated HiGloTM
electro-luminescent backlight with 8-second auto-off.
In the top line of the LCD panel is displayed one
of four kinetic weather forecast icons: Sunny, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, or Rainy
(which means snowy when it's cold outside).
The forecast is
for 12 to 24 hours in the future. It covers an 18- to
30-mile (30- to 50-km) radius and is 70 to 75 percent accurate.
The second line of the LCD panel is where indoor relative humidity and temperature
are displayed. Humidity is displayed in percent, and temperatures (both indoor and remote) can be in your choice
of
°F or °C, as
selected by a switch in the battery compartment.
The temperature and
relative humidity for the selected outdoor/remote channel are displayed in
the LCD panel's third line. You press
the CHANNEL button to alternately display these values for remote channels 1 through 3. The station can also be optioned
to auto-scan, in which case data for all remote sensors in use alternates every 3 seconds. By the way, if any remotes
are
temperature-only (see below), humidity for those channels is not shown.
The station's memory allows you to display recorded
minimum and maximum temperature and humidity values for indoors and all
remotes in use since the last memory reset. You can do this at a push of
the MEM button, which on this station is located in the battery
compartment.
The fourth line of the LCD
panel shows the time as hour and minutes in 12-hour format with AM or PM. If the clock has successfully received the
WWVB 60 kHz time-synchronization radio signal from the U.S. atomic clock
in Colorado, a tower and waves icon appears to the left of the time.
In the fifth line of the
LCD panel, the month, date, and weekday are shown digitally in that order. The weekday is a two-letter
abbreviation in your choice of English, French,
German, Italian, or Spanish. Clock seconds can be displayed as an
alternative to the weekday. Although you must select your continental U.S. time zone (Pacific,
Mountain, Central, or Eastern), the zone is only displayed during
setup in the space where the weekday or seconds appear during normal
operation. The current moon phase is displayed as one of eight
icons just below the calendar information. You can also view the moon
phases for past and future dates if you wish.
The BAR638HGA's atomic
clock has a single daily crescendo alarm with 2-minute duration and an
available 8-minute snooze function. The set alarm time can be viewed as an
alternative to the normal time and calendar display.
One THGR122NX wireless
remote temperature and humidity sensor is included with the BAR638HGA, and the station can actually
monitor up to three temperature or temperature-humidity sensors at a distance
of up to 100 feet (30 meters). The THGR122NX has its own
LCD panel for viewing the temperature and humidity locally. You can
select °F or °C for the temperature unit on the remote. The
temperature unit selected on the main station overrides that of the
remote(s). Additional remote
sensors can be obtained separately and include the following:
- THGR268. This is a temperature and humidity sensor with its own
display. It is essentially equivalent to the included THGR122NX.
- THR268. This is a temperature-only sensor with its own display.
- THC268. This is a temperature-only sensor with a
waterproof probe on a 10-foot
(3-meter) cable and its own display.
The main unit is designed
for free-standing use only. Its integral base doubles as the battery
compartment. The base is hinged so that the display portion can
stand vertically or be tilted back a little at two different angles. The remote thermo-hygro sensor can be mounted on a wall, or you can install the included
wire stand for free-standing use.
The main unit uses three
AA alkaline batteries, and the remote thermo-hygro sensor uses two AAA alkaline
batteries. All five batteries are included. If the remote
will be used in sub-freezing temperature conditions, lithium AAA batteries are
recommended instead of alkaline.

Features and Benefits:
- It's wireless! Easy
setup with no cables to string--a remote sensor sends temperature
and humidity data back to the main unit (base station) via 433MHz radio
waves.
- Know the temperature
and relative humidity both indoors and at up to three remote
locations--outdoors or in your greenhouse, baby's room, warehouse,
wine cellar or other location--from the comfort of your home or
office.
- At a glance, check the
current weather forecast, temperature, humidity, and moon phase.
- Four kinetic weather forecast
icons indicate Sunny, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, or Rainy (snowy when
it's cold).
- Weather forecast is
for 12 to 24 hours in the future, covers an 18- to
30-mile (30- to 50-km) radius, and is 70 to 75 percent accurate.
- Both main unit and
remote show relative humidity in percent and can show temperatures in
either °C or °F.
- Integral memory stores
maximum and minimum temperature and humidity readings (indoor and
from all remotes) for instant pushbutton display.
- Moon phase is
preprogrammed for years 2001 through 2099 and can be viewed for any
date in those years. Calendar must be set properly to see correct
moon phase (one of eight icons).
- Comes with
one THGR122NX thermo-hygro sensor. Add one or two additional sensors
(optional; not included) to monitor up to three remote locations,
indoors or out.
- Integral
radio-controlled clock with calendar and alarm automatically
synchronizes itself to the U.S. atomic clock in Colorado and also
automatically adjusts for Daylight Saving Time.
- A kinetic RF (radio
frequency) tower-and-wave icon indicates that the clock is receiving
the synchronizing radio signals for time and date.
- RF reception can be
disabled for manual clock and calendar setting if desired (for example, if station is
taken out of range of the time-synchronization signal).
- Clock displays time in
12-hour format as hour and minutes with AM or PM. Clock seconds are an
alternative to weekday.
- Calendar display shows
month and date numerically and shows weekday (if selected) as a
two-letter abbreviation.
- Weekday abbreviation
is user-selectable for any of five languages: English, French,
German, Italian, or Spanish.
- Time zone (Pacific,
Mountain, Central, or Eastern) is shown as an abbreviation that is
only displayed during setup.
- Daily 2-minute
crescendo alarm has an available 8-minute snooze function.
- Maximum transmission
range for remote sensor is 100 feet (30 meters).
- Both main unit and
remote sensor provide low-battery indications.
- Main unit is
handsomely styled and has an integral hinged base for free-standing
use only.
- Remote thermo-hygro sensor can
be free-standing (with included wire stand installed) or
wall-mounted.
